FAQs
Wish Upon a Wedding grants wedding and civil union ceremonies for adults with terminal illnesses, at destinations across the United States. With our headquarters located in the San Francisco Bay Area, and a nationwide network of volunteers and supporters, we serve those in the greatest need around the country. We receive no state or federal funding, relying instead on the generosity of our supporters to fulfill Wish requests.
How long does it take to process a Wish?
The verification process of all applications may take up to three (3) weeks, with the exception of Urgent Wishes. Incomplete applications may result in delay of the approval process.
What is an Urgent Wish?
Urgent Wishes are requests made for those with a life expectancy of six months or less. WUW processes Urgent Wishes on a case-by-case basis.
Why do I have to provide a Credit Card?
The Wish Recipient, or caregiver, must have a major credit card and proof that they can cover the costs of any medical needs deemed necessary or in the event of an emergency. They must have the financial means to provide for airline changes, additional hotel accommodations, emergency and non-emergency transportation, and meals, if necessary.
Can I have loved ones or family brought to me for the wedding/ceremony?
How long can I/they stay?
If the Wish recipient wants loved ones, family members or friends brought to them, WUW, will cover up to four individuals’ airfare (or other possible travel) and hotel accommodations (two rooms, for up to four individuals, and a maximum of three nights). Any additional guests will be at their own expense.
How are airline tickets handled?
For Wishes requiring air travel, we rely on donated frequent flyer miles. If frequent flyer miles cannot be raised in time, flights may be purchased if funding allows. All Wish Recipients fly economy class. All flights are booked at least 14 days in advance. Travelers must be flexible on their requested travel dates. Urgent Wishes may not always qualify for Airline Tickets.
What if I require special medical assistance?
Wish Upon a Wedding cannot assist with medical needs such as air ambulance transportation, oxygen, medical equipment, treatments nurses, and/or nurse’s aides. All medical assistance should be pre-arranged by your medical provider. This includes oxygen, wheel chairs, scooters, etc. We cannot arrange or provide for hospice care, medical treatments, or nursing care during the Wedding Wish.
Wish Upon a Wedding cannot assist with ambulance transportation, emergency room visits or hospital admissions, should an emergency occur during the Wedding Wish. WUW will not incur any additional costs deemed necessary for family members should their visit need to be extended while the Wish Recipient is hospitalized or with further arrangements if an emergency or death should occur.
