Meet Jake, a Lance Corporal in the Marine Corps, currently serving in Twentynine Palms, California.  He’s preparing for a seven-month deployment to Afghanistan.  Now meet Meredith, a former Marine Corps Officer.  This is their story, one of faith, hope & love.

Jake and Meredith met at DC Metro Church and became friends.  It wasn’t long before they knew that their relationship was destined for more even in the midst of so many  life challenges.  But Jake didn’t have money for an engagement ring, much less a wedding, so they prayed.  Their prayers were answered by the kindness of a stranger and by Wish Upon A Wedding, the world’s first nonprofit wish granting organization providing weddings and vow renewals for couples facing terminal illness and serious life-altering circumstances.

Two weeks after that prayer, Jake and Meredith went  to Minneapolis to visit Jake’s family.  One day, the couple went out to eat with a large group from his families’ church.  One of the women in that group, a stranger to the couple, graciously offered her engagement ring.  Jake proposed on the spot.  Meredith accepted over nachos and lemonade.   They believed that their marriage was ordained by God and they had the faith to know that everything would work out perfectly.

The couple has faced other adversities and hardships, that most of us may not be able to handle. Meeting life’s challenges with faith and determination, and most importantly, a strong bond of love, they held on to the belief that God would make a way for them to be married before Jake’s deployment to Afghanistan.  Even with a ring on her finger, the couple still had no way to afford a wedding.  Unbeknownst to them, a co-worker of Meredith’s submitted the couple’s story to Wish Upon A Wedding’s DC chapter as a special circumstance’s wish.

Thanks to many wonderful Wish Upon A Wedding wish granters and volunteers, on January 8th Jake and Meredith’s wedding wish will come true in Annapolis, Maryland. The couple will wed at the Naval Academy, from which Meredith graduated in 2005.  Their reception is graciously being hosted by the Duke of Gloucester Ballroom at the Maryland Inn.

Jake and Meredith are so thankful for all of the time, effort, resources and new friends that have come from this experience with Wish Upon A Wedding.
*Note* While most of the wishes we grant are for couples facing terminal illness, our organization also provides a limited number of “special circumstance” wishes throughout the year, based on our available resources.
